Emphasis on the right words when speaking

You may create a lot of confusion with your audience when you are emphasising the wrong words when speaking in front of an audience. Especially when you have some key messages / phrases to bring across to your audience it is important to put the emphasis on the right word(s). You may want to practice in front of someone else to ensure emphasising is done correctly. You can also record yourself when practicing and listen back to check if you are doing this correctly.

Why is it important to put emphasis on the correct words? The meaning of what you intend to say can be very different if you don’t put the emphasis on the right word. The classic example is the following:

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

I didn’t tell her you are stupid.

By putting the emphasis on a different word in this example you can hear that the meaning of the sentence will change. Ensure that you put the emphasis on the right words when you present in front of an audience.
