Align with the host of the event before presenting

Do you need to speak at an event and you think you know what you need to speak about? That is not enough. Make sure you are 100% certain that you what exactly you need to talk about and cover during your presentation. It is not good feedback after your presentation if they tell you that the presentation was nice, but wasn’t covering what was expected.

Make sure that you align upfront with the host of the event what you need to cover during your presentation. Cover this in quite a level of detail so there can be no differences in expectations. Sometimes the host will only ask for your presentation slides. Normally your presentation slides will be supportive of what you are going to say and will not cover the word-for-word content of your presentation (if it does you could argue what the point is of having the presentation instead of just sending the slides to the audience…). Therefore ask for a meeting to discuss the content of your presentation. Confirm that it is covering the expectations. See if it properly fits in the content of the rest of the event. If not, check if there are some part to add or change to make sure that it is properly linked with the rest of the event. You may seek if the event as a certain theme or slogan that you can connect to during your presentation.
