Getting some / your audience to change a habit may be one of the most difficult things to do if that is the intended objective of your presentation. People in general do not easily change a habit. Giving a presentation with the objective to have your audience change a habit is a difficult challenge. So, how to have your audience change a habit?
There are a lot of different things that you can do to initiate changing a habit.
What you could do first is to make your audience aware that they have this habit. Nothing will probably changes if your audience doesn’t realize what they currently do to make this change. To set the tone you can start with giving a general example about these habits and next dive into the specific of the habit that needs to be changes. For example you can say the following to set the tone:
“You know that people are creatures who like sticking to their habits and what the are used to do. For example if, there would be a break now and you would need to leave the room to get something to drink and eat – don’t leave now, this is just an example as we are not done yet – I am pretty certain that when you would come back into this room you would go sit at the same place as you are currently sitting. So why is that? You could go sit somewhere else? Most people like to keep things the same and stick to their habits. Now you realize this, let’s talk about…”
You can see in this example you are taking advantage of a very recognizable situation that your audience can relate to. You can not build on this to further introduce the specific habit that will need to change.
