Should you speak from behind a presentation desk?

A “presentation desk” is available at various locations. Should you use such a presentation desk? Such a desk is blocking the view of the audience towards a big part of your body (almost like a shield).

Presenting is done with the entire body and therefore it is best not to block the view by a presentation desk.

I realize that you may think it is nice to use such a presentation desk as you can use it to lean against, avoid showing nerves (shaking) and put some papers with speaker notes on it. However, if you want to be recognized as an excellent public speaker it is better to try not to use a presentation desk.
